The Land Between is a 3-part documentary series that explores our evolving relationship with the biologically and geologically diverse region between the Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence Lowlands in Ontario, Canada.

In a remote village in Xinjiang, the Tajik people face a quiet crisis: the loss of their language. The older generation speaks in the ancient Tajik language using the Uyghur script, while the younger generation, influenced by government policies, speaks Mandarin and reads Chinese characters. This linguistic divide has created an invisible barrier between them, making communication between grandparents and children difficult. Through the filmmaker’s intimate journey in the village, the film explores the emotional distance that words can’t bridge. As the villagers navigate their daily lives—through rituals, songs, and silent gestures—a deep, unspoken bond emerges, transcending the limits of language. The film is a poetic meditation on the power of human connection in the face of cultural and linguistic loss.

On the edge of a road that leads out of town, some Nigerian prostitutes pass the time on sagging sofas, bargaining with white clients for their bodies and their thoughts. On another street, some Slavic boys wait to be hired as bricklayers, but they are willing to do any kind of work. At night, an Egyptian works as an illegal in a gas station.

There is only one young woman and two old women left of the whole nation. These old women are dreaming of something unattainable - of motherhood. One of the old women never had any children, the second old woman lost her newborn baby many years ago.

A microbudget, improvised drama, The Land follows the lives of its three main characters over a few tense days, as their lives quickly implode after an old friend returns to bring some long-held secrets to the fore.

Through six very different families, documentary “The Land” shows the variety of the countryside in the 21st century, the contradictions of countryside living as well as illusions about farmer’s life. There are various reasons why our protagonists chose to live in the homesteads, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Some were done with spending too much time in an office, traffic and living a virtual life, they wanted real, tangible things. Some have moved to countryside by their own choice, but some by predisposition of their families. But what unites them all - they aspire for the stability provided by their own land and house. Together with our protagonists, we will spend one year’s cycle of farmer’s life, that will start with the spring sowing and finish with the autumn harvest and land preparation for the next year.

This third part of the series focuses on Canada's participation in NORAD and the events leading up to Canada's becoming a "nuclear no-man's land." In the late 1980s we are confronted with important choices about our role on the international scene, and host Gwynne Dyer offers intriguing predictions and possibilities about how our decisions could have global impact.
